You don’t have to be a physician working with patients on the front lines of medicine to know that mental illness is becoming more prevalent and the approved treatments increasingly inadequate. I support LD 1914 because I have seen, first-hand, that psilocybin-containing mushrooms are a powerful, versatile and relatively safe treatment that could help thousands of Mainers get their lives back. We need to provide safe opportunities for them to do so and remove criminal penalties.

Dustin Sulak, D.O.

In all my time advocating for Veterans since my time in the service, I have seen the tragic shortcomings of our current options for mental health far too often. I, and many others, firmly believe in the ability psilocybin has in successfully managing a person’s mental health. With an incredible low risk factor, removing criminal penalties concerning psilocybin is a common sense approach to promoting mental health and saving lives.

Research demonstrating the health benefits of psilocybin continues to increase, but the ongoing legal restrictions force people to seek this medicine within the shadows of fear. LD 1914 can help change this with educated discussions, experienced guidance, and integrative support. This bill is grounded in what Maine needs, helping us openly address our quest for wholeness, offer some honor to this medicine, and reduce the risks of harmful use.
